SITAR SHEHNAI and TABLA TRIO:

In the North Indian Classical Music tradition, few instruments embody the feeling and
mystery like the Shehnai. Traditionally a royal Court instrument hence thename Sheh
(or Shah) meaning "King" and nai meaning "flute," today it is more commonly found in
temples and wedding ceremonies and because of the role it plays in these events the
Shehnai could be considered the most auspicious instrument of India. In the hands of
a master musician such as Pandeet Shailesh Bhagawat the Shehnai is a perfect touch
to any Indian ceremony or event. Pandeet Shailesh Bhagawat is an experienced master
musician from the Banaras Gharana who has performed in Europe and in the United
States. The Sitar is the quintessential Indian instrument. Its sound resonates with both
traditional Indian audiences and with Americans familiar with the Beatles and the 1960's
styles of music. The Sitar as played by Maestro Aloke Dasgupta is both a bastion of
traditional Raga and a modern evolving instrument. In any style Aloke Dasgupta is a
consummate musician who has performed worldwide with such notables as the L.A.
Philharmonic, Prof. V.G. Jog ( Leading Indian violinist), Cheap Trick, No Doubt, and
others. Either performing at the Hollywood Bowl or at your private show, without question,
Mr. Dasgupta will be a highlight of any event at which he is performing. The uniqueness of
a Sitar-Shehnai duet is unprecedented, a combination rarely found in the United States.
The highly lyrical nature of the Shehnai in conjunction with the exciting rhythmic nature of
the Sitar is truly a natural match. Accompanied by the Tabla virtuosity of Pandeet Shashanka
Bakshi, exponent of Benaras gharana, as well as the mystical drone of the tanpura, this trio of
master musicians create a highly authentic musical experience for all. If a more contemporary
feel is appropriate for your show please consider our Sitar, shenai, bansuri (Indian traditional
bamboo flute), Guitar and tabla ensemble featuring music of the Beatles, Elvis, Michael
Jackson, and other Contemporary Western Artists as well as jazzy interpretation of Bach. This
ensemble works well as reception music so please consider this in conjunction with more
traditional music for the service. For any additional information please contact Daniel, manager
for Aloke Dasgupta at 714.686.5221
